How to Find Your Life Purpose.

The question, "What is my life purpose?" is one that many of us wrestle with, especially during moments of feeling unfulfilled or disconnected.

It's a question that often arises when we're unsure of our direction or feel distant from our true selves. But sometimes, your purpose doesn't have to be something you hunt for actively—it can emerge naturally as you follow what lights you up and live authentically.

Often, purpose reveals itself when we stop forcing it and allow it to flow from the heart of what we love.

Understanding Purpose: A Journey of Discovery

Purpose is rarely a one-size-fits-all answer.

It's more of a journey—a process of discovery and re-discovery over time.

What feels meaningful at one stage in your life may shift or evolve, because purpose isn’t a fixed destination. The key is to stay open and let your experiences, passions, and challenges guide you to what truly resonates.

Finding Purpose Through What Feels Natural

Purpose often aligns with what feels natural to us—the activities or roles that bring us joy and energy. Think back to moments where you felt deeply engaged or fully yourself. What were you doing? These moments can often reveal the talents, passions, or skills that may form the foundation of your purpose.

Pay attention to what excites you without effort; these are often the clues to your calling.

If you find yourself deeply immersed in an activity, whether it’s teaching, writing, or problem-solving, it’s a sign that you’re connected to your purpose. Sometimes these gifts are so inherent that they’re easy to overlook, but once you start following them, they can lead you to a fulfilling life of meaning and impact.

Embrace the Power of Stepping Away

Sometimes, the best way to find clarity is to step away from what you're currently doing. Taking a break or changing direction doesn’t mean you’ve failed. In fact, it’s often a necessary step that allows you to gain perspective. By creating space, you give yourself the time and freedom to explore what truly matters to you.

You might discover that your passion for something has deepened, or that you’re ready to move on.

Stepping away from something, whether it’s a job, relationship, or routine, allows you to return with fresh eyes and a clearer sense of what aligns with your values.

Balancing Passion and Practicality

Let’s face it—passion doesn’t always pay the bills.

It’s one thing to feel passionate about something, but it’s another to make sure you're taking care of the practical side of life. In these moments, it’s important to find balance: to manage the practical, everyday responsibilities while still making time to follow what lights you up.

For me, writing and sharing my thoughts with the world is my passion. It’s what drives me from the inside, but I also need to ensure that I’m paying my bills and managing the essential parts of life. For you, it might be something entirely different—perhaps a creative project, helping others, or working in a field you love.

Whatever it is, life can't be one-dimensional.

We need to find a way to balance the necessary with the deeply fulfilling, to ensure both our responsibilities and passions have their rightful place.

When you make time for both, you create a life that feels whole and purposeful. It’s not about sacrificing one for the other, but about weaving both into your daily existence, allowing you to pursue your passion while managing the practical realities of life.

Purpose Often Lies in Helping Others

Another way purpose can emerge is through helping others.

Often, purpose is most clearly seen when we shift our focus from ourselves to supporting those who are struggling or in need. If you find yourself naturally inclined to guide, mentor, or uplift others, it could be a sign that your purpose is linked to service. The most impactful work often comes from the act of helping others, and this can offer deep fulfilment.

Whether you’re teaching, mentoring, or simply being there for someone in need, providing support can help you recognise your own sense of purpose. When you see how your efforts make a difference in someone else’s life, the fulfilment you gain is immeasurable.

Define Success on Your Own Terms

Purpose is not about following a preset roadmap or achieving success as the world defines it. For many, purpose lies in making an impact—big or small—on the world and those around us. It’s about defining success on your own terms, based on what feels truly meaningful.

For me, it’s the impact I make through my teaching and writing that defines success, rather than external measures like salary or status. Success doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. It’s about what brings you joy, satisfaction, and a sense of fulfilment.

Once you define success based on your own values, it becomes easier to pursue your purpose without being swayed by societal expectations. I write about this in detail in my book, How did I get here?

When Purpose Finds You

Sometimes, purpose doesn’t require a search—it finds you when you’re living authentically and following what feels right.

When you allow yourself to stay in flow with life, purpose can emerge naturally. It’s not about forcing a specific outcome but about aligning with the activities and relationships that bring you the most joy.

Rather than feeling like a struggle, living in alignment with your purpose feels like an organic unfolding. By paying attention to what excites you, what fulfils you, and what feels right, purpose begins to reveal itself with clarity and grace.

Final Thoughts: Finding Your Purpose Is a Process

Finding your life purpose isn’t always straightforward, and it may take time to uncover. You may need to explore different paths, make mistakes, and come back to things you’ve abandoned in the past.

Sometimes, we only recognise our purpose when we look back with the wisdom of experience.

The journey can be messy, but every step teaches you something valuable.

If you’re feeling lost or unsure, remember that it’s okay to take your time.

Purpose doesn’t always come in a neat package, but when you stay true to yourself, it will eventually reveal itself.

Embrace the process and trust that your purpose is closer than you think—waiting for you to discover it in your own unique way.
